We know how important it is to keep your little ones warm through the cooler winter months, and with so many kids clothing choices available, it can be hard to know which ones are truly going to keep your little ones warm. In this blog, we will have a look at the essentials that are sure to keep your little ones warm this winter 2024.
Layering your little ones
Knowing how to layer your kids' clothing during the winter months is such a key part in keeping your little ones warm and comfy. Knowing how to add layers to your kids for maximum comfiness may seem a little tricky at first, but once you know the basics you'll be feeling confident when the next winter season comes along! There are four main layer we will discussing: The Base Layer, First Layer, Hoodie or Jumper Layer, and the Outdoor Layer. Let's get started!
One: The Base Layer
The base layer is the first layer of clothing that your little one will put on. When my kids were babies, their base layer was usually a bodysuit, either long sleeve or short sleeve (depending on how cold it is). As they’ve gotten older, I’ve replaced their bodysuits with either a tight singlet, tee, or long sleeve. If the weather seems especially cold I'll also add thermal tights (long or short) to keep their legs extra warm as well. We highly recommend that you buy base layers made from 100% cotton, as cotton clothing is extremely breathable and helps ensure that your little ones don’t overheat as you start to add more layers on. 100% merino clothing (although more expensive) is also a great choice - especially if you live somewhere with much cooler temperatures during the winter season.
Two: First Layer
The first layer you put on your little one (after putting on the base layer) can be something as simple as a slightly loose t-shirt (again, long sleeved or short sleeved depending on how cold it is). For my kids, I tend to switch the first layer to be the opposite sleeve length of the base layer. This means if i've chosen a short sleeve tee as my base layer, I will make the first layer a long sleeve tee instead. For bottoms, I add warm, comfy pants either by themself or over top of thermal tights. If your little one prefers dresses or skirts, adding long thermal tights underneath is great for extra warmth and comfiness!
If you have a little one that runs on the warmer side, I opt for using just a long sleeved tee matched with a hoodie or jumper (effectively removing the base layer). We will be able to discuss hoodies and jumpers more in the next section.
Three: Hoodie or Jumper Layer
This next layer is pretty straight forward - you can choose a hoodie, jumper, or any jersey that is comfortable for your little one to wear. We recommend not choosing an outside jacket, puffer, or vest for this layer, as it allows your little one to have an extra layer suitable for both indoor and outdoor play.
Looking for some warm winter clothing for your little one? Our Winter Collection offers warm and cozy winter sets as a perfect extra layer. All Hoodie sets are unisex, with an array of colours to suit your little ones' needs.
Four: The Outdoor Layer
Our final layer is our outdoor layer. This layer is usually only for if your little one is playing either outdoors or in a big indoor area (such as a stadium or arena). This layer can be either an outdoor jacket, puffer, or vest. We've designed our puffer vest to be the perfect layer your little one needs. Read our blog on kids' jackets vs vests here to learn more about what outdoor layer is best for your little one.
Knowing Your Little Ones
All kids are different when it comes to body temperatures and what level of warmth they’re comfortable with. What may work for one kid, may not work for another. My girls for example, tend to need more layers to keep warm during the colder months, whereas my son finds the added layers to be too uncomfortable (as he heats up rather quickly). Feel free to adjust the amount of layers your little one needs based on what it is they’re comfortable with; they are your little ones, and you know them best.
Conclusion
knowing the basics of layering your kids clothes is a great way to ensure that they are keeping warm even on the coldest of days. With a little bit of practice you'll hopefully be able to build confidence in dressing your little ones not only for this winter but for all of the winters yet to come!
